TOMS vs BOBS…which one to choose?

5 Mar

The classic espadrille with a for-profit twist (check out my blog post on espadrilles from last year here). I’m sure you’ve heard of them; TOMS shoes, developed by young American entrepreneur Blake Mycoskie and BOBS shoes developed by footwear giant Skechers. Both TOMS shoes and BOBS shoes work on the ‘One for One’ operation. When a customer purchases a pair, a pair of shoes is given away to someone in need. I personally think its a brilliant idea, a great way to still make money while helping others.

Out of curiosity I wanted to look at whether there was an actual difference:

BOBS

TOMS

Hmm not much…I guess price is really where these shoes differentiate. A pair on BOBS will cut you back $38.00 while with a pair of classic TOMS you’re looking at $44.00. Not a lot different, so which would you choose? And the great thing is no matter which you choose, someone in either Argentina (or worldwide with BOBS) will get a pair of shoes.

I picked up a few faves from both:

TOMS do have a better collection, simply because this is all they do (although you can now buy ballet flats, botas AND wedding style!)

Here are the links to each and see what you think!

Shoes + Pie?

30 Jan

It’s been a little while since I last posted, so sending apologies your way! My excuse for you is that since January 4th I moved from Reading, England to Salt Lake City, Utah to study at LDS Business College. And while I have been trying to settle I have been also doing assignments and trying to figure out the public transport system – which is totally different to the UK! All in all it’s been a very interesting few weeks but fun all the same.

So back to footwear fashion – oh how I have missed you! In case you were interested I’m studying for a AAS Degree in Business with Entrepreneurial emphasis. Some of you may argue that there is no reason to take an entrepreneurial course as it is something you become and learn from rather than study. But let me tell you it has been a very unique experience here at the business college and many if not all of the lecturers are business owners themselves. In fact they own and have owned several businesses. Where am I going with this? Well I have come to the conclusion, and as much as it’s a broad statement I’m going to say it anyway, America is a place of endless possibilities and opportunities when it comes to business start-ups. From the small amount of time I have spent here there is a definite difference in the way they feel about business and being an entrepreneur which I feel different to that in the UK. There is just a lot of positive attitude towards starting your own business, which for obvious reasons I just love!

So on to my point, I’m sure many of you know Rev Run from Run DMC a.k.a. Joseph Simmons. If you don’t you must take a look…although it might be ‘tricky’ to tell them apart but he’s the one with the sideburns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-O5IHVhWj0&ob=av2e

A few years ago he started a reality TV series called Run’s House which aired on MTV:

I believe this to be one of the first celebrity reality shows and to be honest one of my favorite…now there are too many it it’s just boring. Anyway his two oldest daughters, Vanessa and Angela, decided to start their own sneaker line under the Simmons brand Run Athletics, calling it ‘Pastry’, and it has certainly gone from strength to strength over the years. Check it out here!

I personally love the concept and as much as I am not a sneaker wearing kind of girl I can’t help but fall in love the with ideas and especially the names of the styles i.e. Glam Pie Fantasy or NYC Sweet Crime – it’s just plain fun! And obviously when they launch a new range it’ll go in the ‘Freshly Baked’ section of the website. It’s charming; it’s sweet and certainly doesn’t put an ounce on your hips. It does wonders for your wallet too with prices ranging from $40 – $100 – you’re not really breaking the bank. And I think it’s worth it, if that’s your kind of thing!

Here are some of my favorites from the collections:

And my favorite FB post of the week goes to this marvelous quote from Marilyn Monroe:

Peace, love and sneakers!

Lost and Found

16 Jan

It’s been 2 weeks since I last posted and a little longer since I posted something about shoes!! I have been having serious withdrawals but I do have good reason…like moving to a different country! As of January 4th 2012 I moved from ‘sunny’ Reading in the UK to Salt Lake City, Utah, for educational pursuits and I have just not had a second to write a blog post!

With that in mind I wanted to take a little look at my favorite posts of 2011:

  • DIY beaded heels from Something Turquoise: I just love this ‘make your own’ for ‘pimpin’ out your shoes! Get DIYing here
  • Nikita Karizma on the X Factor UK: picture this, you graduated from the London College of Fashion 6 months ago and your designs are now featured on the X Factor FINAL. You know, only viewed by a couple million people in the country and who knows how many worldwide. Pretty EPIC if you ask me! Check it out here
  • 6 Fashion Faux Pas by Paper Bag Diva: This blog post was not just hilarious but SO true, so of course I had to re-post it! (In my opinion obviously). Make sure you don’t make the same mistakes! Get up to date here
  • Fashion student Amy Ryan: I loved catching back up with Amy and seeing how she was since I had last spoken with here. Check out the interview here
  • The Classic: You’ve got to love the pair of shoes in your wardrobe that a) can go with anything b) have lasted for AGES and will never go out of style. Mine is the classic black stiletto pump. Oh and that the fact that this blog included the most amazing shoe wardrobe ever. Get googly-eyed here
  • Vintage: Is there anything better? I really do heart vintage. Get in love here
  • The beginning: The first amorestiletto blog post! I was nervous to put my ideas out there but thanks to you amazing people the blog has been growing in the last 6 months! Reminisce here

Here’s to another 6 months!

Cozy Toes

21 Dec

I keep seeing onesies EVERYWHERE,  from high street stores to the Pick n’ Mix Little Mix girls:

To my brother and his friend Ashley at a fancy dress Christmas party:

I do love one of the Facebook comments for this photo of my brother, something along the lines of ‘and I’m not referring to your last 6 girlfriends’ that did make me giggle out loud!

Who would have thought that adult onesies would ever be fashionable? But hey they are AND they keep you warm. Personally I think they are great for the ‘I’ve eaten way too much’ coma-like states we get ourselves into this Christmas season, which is totally allowed by the way…diets are out the window! I am giving you full permission to eat lots and not worry one bit. Come January then we can get back on this whole gym thing.

I also give a nod to these fabulous creations…SLIPPER SOCKS. A pretty awesome combination as they are not just slippers, and not just little regular socks – these are the type that keep your calves warm too. Thanks to the illness that decided to rest itself on my chest, throat and nose just give me these, warm blackcurrant squash, a duvet, sofa and something along the lines of ‘While you were Sleeping’ and I’m all good. Not asking for much am I?

Anyway I’m loving these cozy –toe slipper socks from Marks and Spencer:

 £15.00

Plus all these other slipper/boot combinations also from Marks and Spencer. Here’s to keeping warm and cozy this season!

The First Lady of Christmas

19 Dec

If we could get a glimpse of Mrs. Claus’ shoe wardrobe, what do you think we’d find in there? Is Santa’s misses a stiletto or a sensible lady? In my mind Santa’s wife is like one of those Stately home grandmas. With land and property large enough to hold their home and a factory big enough for all those Christmas presents to be made by all those elves, I think she mixes a ‘lady who lunches’ lifestyle with that busy schedule! (I know what you’re thinking…but shhhh…let’s indulge in the child within us and pretend the first lady of Christmas is real!!)

These are some of the shoes I think would be in Mrs. Claus’ collection…from party shoes to sturdy boots!
All images have been selected from the respective websites.

Gabriella‘ from Neneh Stiletto £15.00 SALE

Klum‘ from Red Shoe Heaven £20.00

Farrow‘ from Red Shoe Heaven £32.00

Womens Schuh Kind Bar Court Patent Low Heels £58.00

‘Unze Sandal’ from Red Shoe Heaven £54.95

OK so these are called ‘Aretha’ firstly I LOVE that, secondly they look like a pair fit for the North Pole or any other place where the cold winds slice right through you (like the UK over the next few days)…
U.S. Polo Assn. ARETHA – Snow Boots £55.00 SALE

Ursula Mascaró ANGELIS - Ankle Boots £215.00

I can only imagine her wardrobe would be HUGE! A bit like this lady’s:
